Former ISI Chief Faiz Hameed Sentenced to 14 Years by Military Court

Pakistan has witnessed an unprecedented development as former Inter Service Intelligence (ISI) chief Faiz Hameed has been sentenced to 14 years in jail by a military court. This mark the first time in the country’s history that a serving or retired ISI director general has been court-martialled. Faiz Hameed served as ISI chief from 2019 to 2021 during the government of former Prime Minister Imran Khan Known as a close ally of Khan he took early retirement after Khan’s removal through a no confidence vote in 2022.

Charges Against Faiz Hameed

According to the ISPR the 15 month long court martial conducted under the Pakistan Army Act found him guilty on four major charges:

  • Involvement in political activities
  • Violation of the Official Secrets Act
  • Misuse of authority and government resources
  • Actions causing harm to citizens and state interests

The proceedings were held behind closed doors and detailed evidence was not made public.

Military Court Proceedings

The trial officially began on 12 August 2024 lasting more than a year. ISPR confirm that Hameed was provided:

  • A defence team of his choice
  • Legal representation throughout the trial
  • The right to appeal the verdict

 Right to Appeal

Hameed’s lawyer Mian Ali Ashfaq rejected the charges declaring him “1000% innocent.” He added that the defence team only learned of the verdict through the ISPR press release and would appeal immediately. The first appeal will be submitted to the Army Chief followed by the Supreme Court of Pakistan if required.

Alleged Role in Political Unrest

ISPR noted that separate proceedings are ongoing regarding Hameed’s alleged involvement in creating political agitation believed to be linked to the 9 May 2023 protests following Imran Khan’s arrest.
