PPL Discovers Unconventional Gas Potential in Sindh’s Kandhkot Area

Pakistan Petroleum Limited has made an important breakthrough in Pakistan energy sector by unlocking the unconventional gas potential in Sindh’s Kandhkot area of Pakistan and the discovery was made at the exploratory well LAL X-1 which is located in District Kashmore where PPL holds 100 percent working interest as the operator. This development highlights new possibilities for boosting local gas supplies amid the country’s growing energy need.

Details of the Discovery

The LAL X-1 well was drilled to explore the Lower Alabaster Formation targeting unconventional hydrocarbon resources trapped in a tight rock layer and Drilling operations were completed successfully, reaching a depth of around 1408 metre.

Post-completion testing confirm the presence of gas with the well producing approximately 0.138 million cubic feet per day (MMscfd) at a flowing wellhead pressure of 33 psi. Although the flow rate is currently modest it clearly indicates hydrocarbon potential in the formation.

Why Unconventional Gas Matters

Unconventional gas is found in dense geological formations where gas does not flow freely like conventional reservoirs and extracting such resources requires advanced techniques and detailed evaluation. Successful identification of unconventional gas is considered a major technical achievement as it opens new exploration horizons and reduces reliance on imported energy.

Future Plans

PPL plans to conduct further technical studies and detailed analysis of the well data and Additional exploration and appraisal activities may follow to determine the commercial viability of the Lower Alabaster Formation in the Kandhkot area. These steps will help assess whether large scale production can be achieved in the future.

Conclusion

The unconventional gas discovery at the LAL X-1 well marks a significant milestone for Pakistan Petroleum Limited and the country’s energy sector. While still at an early stage the find strengthens confidence in Pakistan unexplored geological potential. With further evaluation and investment, this discovery could contribute to improving domestic gas supplies and enhancing long-term energy security for Pakistan
